Progressive New Media: Current Affairs

Founded in 2015 by Nathan J. Robinson and Oren Nimni, Current Affairs has emerged as a growing voice in progressive media. Launched through a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $16,000, the magazine set out to blend political analysis with comedy and cultural commentary with a focus on progressive ideas and talking points. Robinson, a Harvard-educated sociologist and Yale Law graduate, wanted to make a publication that would make political discourse accessible and engaging to everyday Americans.

While it initially started as a a print magazine, Current Affairs quickly expanded its online presence, offering articles that critique capitalism, advocate for social justice, and challenge mainstream liberal perspectives. The magazine's approach combines in-depth essays with illustrations and satirical advertisements, aiming to make complex political ideas more digestible. In addition to this focus on writing Current Affairs also operates a number of media platforms including a website and podcast in addition to other video platforms.

In 2021, Current Affairs faced challenges when staff members resigned over disagreements about workplace democracy and organizational structure among other issues. Despite this, the magazine continues to publish content and has maintained a relatively loyal readership group. Current Affairs future outlook includes expanding its podcast offerings and exploring multimedia storytelling to further its mission of making leftist politics informative and entertaining.

  1. The progressive atmosphere is practically empty. There are not many large outlets that offer anything more progressive than the democratic party and having one is very important. Larger voices need to be heard for leftists in America while right-wing voices are all over.
